Recently I shot the promo photos for the release of Dark Was the Night, a compilation with profits benefiting the Red Hot Organization – an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS. If you haven’t heard any of the Red Hot compilations released over the past two decades they include unreleased tracks by some great artists made specifically for the Red Hot project. This current comp features Yo La Tengo, Spoon, Grizzly Bear + Feist, Arcade Fire… It’s worth investigating and you can buy it here.
Pictured above are Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National who produced the album with John Carlin (founder of the Red Hot Organization) as the executive producer. Great men who allowed me to shoot this out in the cold light of January in about 10 mins.

Number two in this series of photoposts of singular images that I feel have a certain weight. This was shot with my all time favorite camera, the 35mm Olympus Stylus Epic. If I had to choose only one camera to use for the rest of my life the choice would be simple, this extremely sharp, fast fixed lens, a small smooth pocketable body. This camera was a staple for every professional before high-end digital point and shoots came about. I had forsaken this camera for a while, in favor of said digital point and shoots but the lag killed me. Point, depress shutter… then wait and watch as they moment changes dramatically as a second or two goes by… then the shutter ‘goes off,’ decisive moment be damned. There isn’t a digital point and shoot that I know of that rises above this and I’ve bought and tried them all. It took me years to go back to the obvious, the one camera that I have literally taken into my dreams and used. The image above is a digital representation, It will appear different on every monitor. It is a scan of a 4×6 print that doesn’t quite capture the sexy glossiness or the punchy-yet-true color of that luscious green on the printed paper.
In regards to this simple yet sophisticated image making machine, there so much more to elaborate on.
More to follow in the future.
